What is the organism?
All Platyhelminthes are bilateral and can be cut into halves and grow back the same parts and be fine. This is because if their stem cells, which are called neoblasts that course through their bodies. The cells rush to the area where the part is chopped off and begin rebuilding and differentiating into the necessary tissue.
What is the experiment?
The experiment: I came up with a experiment where we'd cut a flatworms head off multiple times, and see how many times the same part can grow back.
My hypothesis: My hypothesis is that the area will always grow back due to the neoblasts that these creatures have.
Procedure: We can start with taking a simple flatworm and cutting the front area right below the eyes off. Then waiting until it grows back. When it does, look at the length of the new flatworm, see if it got shorter, stayed the same length, or even got bigger. Complete this procedure seven more times and keep noting the lengths of the worms body.
Equipment: A scalpel, a measuring tape, flatworm.
Independent Variable: The independent variable of this experiment is the place where we cut the head off of the platyhelminth.
Dependent Variable: The dependent variables of this experiment are, the length of the worm, the amount of time waiting for the head to grow back.
Possible Results: Some results we might have is that it always grows back and the worm becomes stronger or the head could only grow back a certain number of times before the flatworm dies off.
